No real world leader has yet emerged in this new and wonderful field we have chosen to call Web Science. Just for the record, its not me, and I not so sure that Sir Tim Berners-Lee would be too keen to take the crown either. So here’s my vote – meet Professor Stuart Kauffman. Stuart is a true polymath who has contributed to many fields of science and, although he knows of Web Science, alas he does not (yet) actively participate in what little community we have. Nevertheless, Stuart has spent most of his working life pulling together a number of ideas from a long list of disparate studies and his findings map onto the synthetic worlds of information and computing well. The article from Discover magazine is incredible. This science is not just theoretical – it is being applied to real world situations like the Proctor & Gamble supply chain issue – I shall be reading more about Stuart’s work!
